Silversides (Menidia menidia) are a wild caught product off the shores of Prince Edward Island. They are fished in the tidal ponds, rivers, bays and estuaries all around the Island. Catch date is a single yearly event occurring between October and November. It is a small schooling fish, spawning in the early summer with fish from each summer’s spawning forming the bulk of the catch in the following fall. The life cycle is brief with only a very small proportion of silversides reaching two years of age. While the species is encountered mostly near shorelines, it sometimes undergoes offshore migrations in winter. Silversides are consumed by a wide variety of predators, including birds, seals, and many species of fish. Populations range from the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence to Florida. The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch has not issued a rating for Silversides.

All Silversides provided by Bionic Zoo & Aquarium are caught with a purse seine and pumped into onboard chill tanks using a fish vacuum. Next, they are immediately transported back to a state of the art, HACCP approved packing facility where they are directly placed into their appropriate packaging and blast frozen. Upon completion of freezing, the seafood is transported to either a storage facility or directly to the customer on trucks maintaining 0° F to -10° F, which is the same temperature standard used throughout the entire process from initial freezing to delivery to the customer.
